VAT when importing a company car

When a VAT-registered company buys a car in the VAT system from a dealership in another EU country, the seller issues an invoice without its VAT (intra-EU supply). The company accounts for 25% VAT on the acquisition in Croatia.

The right to deduct this input VAT depends on the type of vehicle: 50% for passenger cars and 100% for commercial vehicles. To buy at the net price, the company must have a VAT identification number for intra-EU trade, and the car must be in the VAT system.

If you do not meet these conditions or want less paperwork, the purchase can also be arranged differently - you will see which option is better in the offer.

Example: a used passenger car in the VAT system, VAT-registered company
Net price of the car (invoice without German VAT)€40,000
Croatian VAT on acquisition (25%)€10,000
Input VAT deduction (50%)- €5,000
Net cost of the car for the company, before PPMV€45,000
The same for a commercial vehicle (100% deduction)
Net price of the car (invoice without German VAT)€40,000
Croatian VAT on acquisition (25%)€10,000
Input VAT deduction (100%)- €10,000
Net cost of the vehicle for the company€40,000

The example is for information only. PPMV is paid regardless of VAT. PPMV calculator →

How to recognise a car with VAT in a listing

To buy at the net price and deduct input VAT, the car must be in the VAT system. You can recognise it in a listing like this:

  • Mobile.de: the net price and the VAT rate (e.g. 19%) are shown below the price.
  • AutoScout24: a small number 1 next to the price of a car with deductible VAT (a footnote saying VAT is shown).
  • On Mobile.de and AutoScout24 you can use the filters to show only cars with deductible VAT.
  • The German labels "MwSt. ausweisbar" or "USt. ausweisbar" mean the car is in the VAT system.
  • "Differenzbesteuert" or "MwSt. nicht ausweisbar" means margin taxation - VAT is not shown and cannot be deducted.

FAQ

Can a company buy a car in Germany without German VAT?

Yes, if the company is VAT-registered with an EU VAT ID number and the car is in the VAT system. The seller then issues an invoice without its VAT, and the company accounts for VAT on the acquisition in Croatia.

How much VAT can a company deduct for a car from the EU?

The right to deduct input VAT is 50% for passenger cars and 100% for commercial vehicles. We recommend confirming the final treatment with your accountant.

Does a company pay PPMV for a car from the EU?

For passenger cars yes - PPMV is paid before registration regardless of VAT, except for electric cars. Different rules apply to commercial vehicles, so we check them for the specific vehicle. We calculate the amount before purchase.

Can a sole trader buy a car from the EU through you?

Yes. We arrange purchases for companies and sole traders; the tax treatment depends on whether the business is VAT-registered.

What do you check on the car before purchase?

Using the VIN we check the vehicle history, paid damage claims, documents and CO₂, and we separately check the dealership selling the car.

The check covers:

  • vehicle history - available service and registration data,
  • paid damage claims - recorded damage and repairs,
  • documents - whether the documents match the car and the listing,
  • CO₂ - the emissions figure that directly affects the PPMV amount,
  • the dealership - who sells the car and how they operate.

If the check reveals something that does not match the listing, you will know before any payment.

Do you only work with customers from Međimurje?

No. We are based in Čakovec and arrange car imports for customers from all over Croatia - Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, Osijek, Varaždin and other cities.

We handle the whole process remotely - by phone, WhatsApp and e-mail: from sending the link and checking the car to the contract and payment. You do not have to come in person, not even to sign the contract.

You pick up the car in Čakovec, ready for registration.

What is PPMV and how is it calculated?

PPMV is the Croatian special motor vehicle tax, paid when a car is first registered in Croatia. For passenger cars it depends on the price, CO₂ emissions, fuel type and, for used cars, the age.

For passenger cars the tax consists of a part based on the selling price of the car and a part based on CO₂ emissions and fuel type. The amounts are set by the Croatian regulation on calculating the special motor vehicle tax.

For used cars, the tax that the same new car would pay is determined first and then reduced according to the age of the car in months (table from the regulation) or according to an assessment of the actual market value.

The final amount is determined by the customs office. You can make an estimate in our PPMV calculator, and we calculate the exact amount for a specific car before purchase.

Do you buy cars from private sellers?

No. We work only with verified dealerships - not with private sellers or street resellers.

When buying from a verified dealership there is a clear contract, an invoice and a responsible party that stands behind the car and the documents. This also matters for leasing, as leasing companies usually finance cars bought from registered dealers.

If you have found a car sold by a private person, get in touch - we will suggest a similar car from a verified dealership.

Can a company buy a car from the EU through you?

Yes. We arrange purchases in the company name, with payment in full or business leasing.

For a company purchase, the tax treatment depends on the status of the car (new or used), how the seller sells it and your company’s VAT status. We determine this for every car before purchase, and we recommend confirming the final tax assessment with your accountant.

When is a car considered "new" for VAT purposes?

Under EU VAT rules a means of transport is considered new if it is supplied no more than six months after first entering into service or if it has covered no more than 6,000 km.

For new means of transport, VAT is generally charged in the member state into which the car is brought, not in the seller’s country. We check the tax treatment of every car before purchase.
