Frequently asked questions
A short answer first, details below. Can't find your question? Send an enquiry - Petar will answer.
Finding a vehicle
How much does your service cost?
The price depends on the car and the scope of work. In the offer you get the total cost up to registration, with every item listed in advance.
The total cost consists of the price of the car, PPMV, transport, homologation, paperwork and our service. You see every item before you decide to buy, so you can compare the car from the EU with offers in Croatia.
Send us the vehicle link or describe what you are looking for and we will prepare an offer.
Can you find a car for me?
Yes. Describe the make, model, budget, year, mileage and equipment, and we will search the EU market and suggest suitable cars.
It is quickest if you know what is a must and what is just nice to have. We check every suggested car before we recommend it to you.
Which cars do you usually handle?
Mostly fairly new cars up to five years old, worth €30,000 or more, from Germany and other EU countries.
These are the cars where a check and a professionally managed purchase bring the most: a larger amount, more equipment to confirm and a higher PPMV. We also sell special vehicles - campervans, vehicles with a wheelchair ramp, hearses and American cars.
Mobile.de
I found a car on Mobile.de. What next?
Send us the listing link. We will check the car and the seller, calculate an estimated PPMV and tell you what the options are and the total cost up to registration.
You do not need to contact the seller or pay a deposit before the check. From the link we see the basic data, and using the VIN we check the history, paid damage claims, documents and the CO₂ figure that matters for PPMV.
After the check you get clear information: whether we recommend the car, what we found and how much the car will cost ready for registration in Croatia. If you decide to buy, we arrange the negotiation, contract, payment, transport, homologation and paperwork.
Is it safe to buy a car on Mobile.de?
Mobile.de is a listings platform, not a seller - safety depends on the specific car and seller. That is why we work only with verified dealerships and check both the car and the dealership before any payment.
Mobile.de lists authorised dealers, smaller traders, but also private persons and street resellers. We do not buy from private sellers or street resellers - we work only with verified dealerships.
The biggest risks are an inaccurate description of the equipment, concealed damage and an unreliable seller. A VIN check and a dealership check before payment reduce these risks.
Never pay a deposit to a seller you have not checked.
AutoScout24
Can you check a car from AutoScout24?
Yes. Send us the AutoScout24 listing link and we will check the vehicle and the seller in the same way as for Mobile.de.
AutoScout24 covers several European markets (Germany, Austria, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and others), so it is often a good source of cars with rarer equipment. The checking and import process is the same regardless of the EU member state the car comes from.
Vehicle check
What do you check on the car before purchase?
Using the VIN we check the vehicle history, paid damage claims, documents and CO₂, and we separately check the dealership selling the car.
The check covers:
- vehicle history - available service and registration data,
- paid damage claims - recorded damage and repairs,
- documents - whether the documents match the car and the listing,
- CO₂ - the emissions figure that directly affects the PPMV amount,
- the dealership - who sells the car and how they operate.
If the check reveals something that does not match the listing, you will know before any payment.
How do you know if the car has had damage?
Using the VIN we check recorded and paid damage claims and compare them with the listing description and the documents.
If the data does not match the listing, we ask the seller for an explanation and documents before we continue. No check can reveal damage that was never recorded anywhere, so we combine several data sources with a check of the seller.
Seller check
Do you buy cars from private sellers?
No. We work only with verified dealerships - not with private sellers or street resellers.
When buying from a verified dealership there is a clear contract, an invoice and a responsible party that stands behind the car and the documents. This also matters for leasing, as leasing companies usually finance cars bought from registered dealers.
If you have found a car sold by a private person, get in touch - we will suggest a similar car from a verified dealership.
How do you check the seller?
We work only with verified dealerships. We check who sells the car, whether they are registered as a dealer, how they operate and whether the data in the listing and the contract match.
We do not buy from private sellers or street resellers. We do not sign a contract or arrange payment until the dealership has been checked. We prepare and review the contract ourselves, so that the purchase terms are clear and protect your interests.
Vehicle import
What does a "turnkey" car import mean?
You choose the car and we arrange everything else - from the check and purchase to transport, homologation, PPMV and handover of a car ready for registration.
The service includes searching for or checking the car, checking the dealership, calculating PPMV, price negotiation, preparing and reviewing the contract, financing, transport, the manufacturer certificate, homologation, temporary plates, the customs declaration for PPMV, the end-of-life vehicle fee and bank fees and commissions.
You do not have to communicate with the seller in a foreign language, organise transport or deal with the paperwork yourself.
Is a car from Germany "imported" in Croatia?
Strictly speaking, a car from another EU member state is not imported but brought in under the intra-EU rules, because goods move within the EU without a customs import procedure. "Import" in the strict sense applies to goods from outside the EU.
In everyday language most people say “importing a car from Germany”, and that is perfectly understandable. The difference matters for the paperwork: no customs duty is paid on a car from the EU, but PPMV is paid and homologation is required when the car is first registered in Croatia.
Transport
How is the car brought to Croatia?
The car is not driven on the road - we bring it from the seller to Croatia on an insured transporter (a car transporter truck). The transport cost is part of the offer.
You do not have to collect the car in person or drive it from abroad. Because it travels on a transporter, the car arrives without extra kilometres and without wear on the way.
PPMV
What is PPMV and how is it calculated?
PPMV is the Croatian special motor vehicle tax, paid when a car is first registered in Croatia. For passenger cars it depends on the price, CO₂ emissions, fuel type and, for used cars, the age.
For passenger cars the tax consists of a part based on the selling price of the car and a part based on CO₂ emissions and fuel type. The amounts are set by the Croatian regulation on calculating the special motor vehicle tax.
For used cars, the tax that the same new car would pay is determined first and then reduced according to the age of the car in months (table from the regulation) or according to an assessment of the actual market value.
The final amount is determined by the customs office. You can make an estimate in our PPMV calculator, and we calculate the exact amount for a specific car before purchase.
When is PPMV paid?
PPMV is paid before the car is first registered in Croatia, based on a declaration submitted to the competent customs office.
We prepare the customs declaration for the PPMV calculation. You know the tax amount in advance from our calculation, before you buy the car.
Do electric cars pay PPMV?
Fully electric cars with CO₂ emissions of 0 g/km do not pay PPMV (the Croatian special motor vehicle tax). We check the status of every car before purchase.
Plug-in hybrids are not exempt - the tax is calculated from their homologated (WLTP) CO₂ emissions. These are usually low, so PPMV is often lower than for a conventional drivetrain.
Leasing
Can I buy a car from the EU on lease?
Yes. Leasing is available to both private buyers and companies. You arrange the lease directly with the leasing company - we help with advice and, if you wish, recommend leasing companies.
With leasing, the purchase of the car abroad must be aligned with the terms of the leasing company. You sign the lease, and we help you: we advise on leasing, recommend leasing companies if you wish, provide the vehicle data the leasing company needs and align the purchase and payment with the leasing terms.
You can calculate an estimated instalment in the leasing calculator. The final terms depend on the leasing company, your creditworthiness, the down payment, the term and the car.
How much is the leasing instalment for a car from the EU?
The instalment depends on the price of the car, the down payment, the term, the interest rate and the residual value. You get an estimate straight away in the leasing calculator.
The calculator gives an estimate. The actual offer comes from the leasing company for the chosen car and your status (private buyer or company) - we are happy to advise you and recommend leasing companies.
Buying as a private person
What do I need to do as a private buyer?
Choose the car and the payment method and send us the personal details needed for the contract and registration. We arrange everything else.
The exact list of documents depends on the payment method (payment in full or leasing). You receive it in the offer, and we handle everything we can digitally.
Buying as a company
Can a company buy a car from the EU through you?
Yes. We arrange purchases in the company name, with payment in full or business leasing.
For a company purchase, the tax treatment depends on the status of the car (new or used), how the seller sells it and your company’s VAT status. We determine this for every car before purchase, and we recommend confirming the final tax assessment with your accountant.
New vehicle
Can you arrange the purchase of a brand-new car from the EU?
Yes. We communicate with the dealer, check the specification and documents and arrange the transport and import of the new car.
Buying a new car in another EU country is worthwhile when you are looking for a specific configuration, a car in stock or a shorter delivery time.
When is a car considered "new" for VAT purposes?
Under EU VAT rules a means of transport is considered new if it is supplied no more than six months after first entering into service or if it has covered no more than 6,000 km.
For new means of transport, VAT is generally charged in the member state into which the car is brought, not in the seller’s country. We check the tax treatment of every car before purchase.
Documents
Which documents do I get with the car?
The invoice, the foreign registration documents, the manufacturer certificate and the homologation documents - everything needed to register the car in Croatia.
We check all documents before transport, so that registration after pickup goes smoothly.
Timeframes
How long does the whole import process take?
A lot depends on the specific car, but most often the car is ready 10 working days after it is ready for pickup from the supplier.
The time until the car is ready for pickup from the supplier depends on:
- how quickly the dealership responds and whether the documents are available,
- financing approval for a lease or loan,
- the payment method.
After that come transport, homologation and the customs declaration - this part usually takes about 10 working days. You get a realistic estimate for the specific car in the offer, and we keep you informed about every step.
Handover
Do you only work with customers from Međimurje?
No. We are based in Čakovec and arrange car imports for customers from all over Croatia - Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, Osijek, Varaždin and other cities.
We handle the whole process remotely - by phone, WhatsApp and e-mail: from sending the link and checking the car to the contract and payment. You do not have to come in person, not even to sign the contract.
You pick up the car in Čakovec, ready for registration.
What does the handover look like?
Pickup is in Čakovec, at a time agreed with you.
You receive the car ready for registration, with all documents. At pickup we go through the documents and the condition of the car together.
Found the car you want to buy?
Send us the link and we will check what is possible.
