Glossary
The most common terms for buying and importing a vehicle from the EU, explained briefly and clearly.
- COC document
-
The Certificate of Conformity issued by the manufacturer. It contains the vehicle's technical data and is needed for homologation and for calculating PPMV.
- End-of-life vehicle fee (FZOEU, RPPO)
-
A fee paid when a vehicle is brought into Croatia. It is paid through the Register of Producers under Extended Producer Responsibility (RPPO), run by the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund (FZOEU) - which is why all three names are often used for the same thing.
- Homologation
-
The procedure that confirms a vehicle complies with the regulations in Croatia. A vehicle from the EU goes through it before registration, based on documents such as the COC document or the manufacturer's certificate.
- Input VAT deduction
-
The right of a VAT-registered company to deduct the VAT paid on a purchase. For vehicles it is 50 % for passenger cars and 100 % for commercial vehicles. We recommend confirming the final treatment with your accountant.
Buying a car as a company - Manufacturer's certificate
-
A document with the vehicle's technical data issued by the manufacturer's authorised representative. It is needed for homologation when the data in the other documents is not sufficient.
- New and used vehicle (for VAT)
-
For VAT purposes a vehicle is considered new if no more than 6 months have passed since its first registration or it has covered no more than 6,000 km. For a new vehicle VAT is paid in Croatia, while a used vehicle must meet both conditions: more than 6 months and more than 6,000 km.
New vehicle import - PPMV (special tax on motor vehicles)
-
A tax paid when a vehicle is brought into Croatia, before registration. It depends on the new vehicle price, CO₂ emissions, fuel type and the age of the vehicle. Electric vehicles are exempt, and for plug-in hybrids the tax is reduced depending on the electric range.
PPMV calculator - Trial plates
-
Temporary number plates that allow a vehicle not yet registered in Croatia to be driven, e.g. to the technical inspection and homologation.
- Turnkey
-
A way of buying in which you choose the vehicle, while we organise the check, purchase, transport, homologation, PPMV and paperwork up to registration. You collect the vehicle ready for registration.
Comparison: yourself or turnkey - Unos and uvoz (bringing in and importing)
-
In Croatian, bringing a vehicle from another EU member state is officially called unos, while uvoz refers to vehicles from countries outside the EU. In everyday speech both are called "uvoz auta".
- Vehicle identification number (VIN)
-
A unique 17-character identification number of the vehicle. It is used to check the vehicle's history, paid damage claims, mileage and service records - the first step before any payment.
